چکیده

Low energy ion and electron measurements made over the south and north polar regions of the sun by the HISCALE instrument on the Ulysses spacecraft during its solar minimum polar passages are summarized. The polar flux levels were considerably reduced in comparison to fluxes in the vicinity of the heliospheric current sheet. Flux variations with a period of ∼ 26 days were seen to nearly 80◦S but were not observed over the northern pole. Solar particle events originating from near-equatorial activity were seen at high southern latitudes, but not at high northern latitudes. Comparisons with in-ecliptic measurements made during the same time interval on the IMP8 spacecraft suggest that the polar differences are largely spatial and not temporal. The flux of low energy (∼ 0.8– 5.0 MeV/nucl) anomalous oxygen was measured to be ∼ 50% higher over the northern polar region than in the south. The flux of solar wind iron, measurable because of its convection into the instrument by the high speed polar solar wind, is estimated to be about a factor of two larger over the south pole than over the north.

The sun and heliosphere at solar maximum.

Recent Ulysses observations from the Sun's equator to the poles reveal fundamental properties of the three-dimensional heliosphere at the maximum in solar activity. The heliospheric magnetic field originates from a magnetic dipole oriented nearly perpendicular to, instead of nearly parallel to, the Sun's rotation axis. Magnetic fields, solar wind, and energetic charged particles from low-latitu...

Mechansims for Latitudinal Transport of Energetic Particles in the Heliosphere

Energetic particles in the heliosphere, from relatively low-energy particles which are accelerated in Corotating Interaction Regions (CIRs) to galactic cosmic rays, are observed to propagate relatively easily in heliographic latitude. Two mechanisms for this transport appear possible: cross-field diffusion, or, in a recent model for the heliospheric magnetic field, by direct magnetic connection...

The biological effects induced by high-charged and energy particles and its application in cancer therapy

The radiobiological effects of high atomic number and energy (HZE particles) ion beams are of interest for radioprotection in space and tumor radiotherapy. Space radiation mainly consists of heavy charged particles from protons to iron ions, which is distinct from common terrestrial forms of radiation. HZE particles pose a significant cancer risk to astronauts on prolonged space missions. With ...

Ulysses COSPIN observations of cosmic rays and solar energetic particles from the South Pole to the North Pole of the Sun during solar maximum

In 2000–2001 Ulysses passed from the south to the north polar regions of the Sun in the inner heliosphere, providing a snapshot of the latitudinal structure of cosmic ray modulation and solar energetic particle populations during a period near solar maximum. Observations from the COSPIN suite of energetic charged particle telescopes show that latitude variations in the cosmic ray intensity in t...

Investigating the Heliosphere with Low-energy Anomalous Cosmic Rays

Two aspects of low-energy (∼0.5–30 MeV/nucleon) anomalous cosmic ray (ACR) phenomena are unique. First, low-rigidity (. 2 GV) ACRs are less affected by particle drifts than higher rigidity particles [1]. Second, outer-heliospheric ACRs having energies below the energy at the peak of the modulated spectrum, but above the adiabatic range, are governed by a different limit of the transport equatio...
